If you thought the Coronavirus outbreak and subsequent lockdown was going to keep us from having a Quran competition this year, you thought wrong!
With some necessary modifications to our usual set up, we’ve found another way to encourage our community reconnect with the Quran during this blessed month.
The competition is open to everyone in Edinburgh and the surrounding areas, aged 6 and above. There will be 3 stages, and participants will be grouped according to age and ability.
At the end of it all, we will hold our finals as a live virtual, with everyone welcome to watch!
Head on over to our Quran Competition page for all the details and to sign up! Deadline for registration is May 7th!
For the month of Ramadan, we are going to be having a weekly Thursday Zoom get-together called
Connecting in Ramadan
Please join in with us as we share and reflect upon our Ramadan experiences.
6pm to 7pm Thursday evenings
Edinburgh Central Mosque is pleased to announce the beginning of the blessed month of Ramadan. The first day of fasting will be Friday the 24th of April.
We extend our warmest wishes to our community, and ask Allah to engulf us in His mercy and safety throughout the month. May He grant us the ability to make the most of this precious time, and accept our sincere worship and righteous deeds, seeking nothing but His pleasure.
Join us, this Thursday 16th April, for an online Zoom of New to Islam, between 7pm and 8pm.
Ramadan is a month of mercy and blessings for the believers. How can we respond to the real purpose of Ramaḍān – to come out a better person at the end of the month and much closer to Allah subhanu wa ta’ala.
If you have any questions about Ramadan or what you can do during it eg if you are ill or unable to fast, please come with your question or post a question in the comments section below and inshallah we will answer it for you.

In line with the most recent government advice (of 23/03/20), Edinburgh Central Mosque is closed to the public with immediate effect until further notice. The Mosque will only open again during this period for the performance of Janaza prayers when this is necessary, with attendance being confined to the immediate family of the deceased, and handled by the Scottish Muslim Funeral Service. For the safety of our staff and their families, they will now be working from home until the Government deems it safe and appropriate for business to resume as normal.
If you require to contact any staff member, including our Imams for advice, please email us at [email protected] and your query will be passed on to the appropriate member of our team and we will respond to you as soon as we can. We thank your for your patience with us during these challenging, and continually developing, times.
While we are deeply saddened that the Mosque is required to temporarily close its doors to the public, we do this knowing that this is for the greater good of our community and the Scottish population. We ask Allah subhaanhu wa’tala to strengthen our faith and trust in Him, His Will, His Knowledge and His Power. And we ask from our community that you stay home, and you stay safe. Allah is with us throughout all of this – may our reaction and response to this trial be one that is most pleasing to Him.
Following advice and guidance received today (19th March 2020) directly from the Chief Medical Officer of Scotland and given the rapid changes in the current situation in the UK about Coronavirus, Edinburgh Central Mosque has decided to suspend ALL CONGREGATIONAL PRAYERS (incl. Jumu’ah Prayer) until further notice. This decision has been reached in line with the guidance issued by the Scottish and UK Governments, and following consultation with Islamic Scholars.
This decision is effective immediately and there will be NO CONGREGATIONAL PRAYERS (incl. Jumu’ah Prayer) from Dhuhr time on Friday 20th March or thereafter until further notice. In the absence of the Jumu’ah Prayer, one should pray 4 raka’at of Dhuhr just like any other day.
The Mosque will remain open for anyone in the area who needs to perform their prayer and this should be done individually. We highly recommend that anyone doing so bring their own prayer mat and perform Wudhu at home. On Fridays the Mosque will remain closed to the public until 30 minute before the start of Asr time.
We also advise the elderly and anyone with an underlying medical condition to pray at home.
We would also like to remind anyone that may develop symptoms, no matter how mild, to self-isolate and not attend mosques.
We will continue to monitor the situation and will issue regular updates if there is any change.

The transmission risk presented by over 1000 people gathering inside the Mosque
is too great for us to allow the Jumu’ah prayer to continue for the time being.

UPDATE: New to Islam

Instead, we are inviting everyone to participate in an online gathering. We would like to encourage others from around Scotland to take advantage of this online opportunity and join us.
Amin Buxton will be leading us in looking at the wonderful Night Journey of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Participants will be able to interact and ask questions.
